The Inside Rail

Ski Friday. Yes, ski Friday. Off to the slopes with Miles for the finale of the ski season at Bryce Resort. The Ski Olympics. Miles goes at 11:30.

Last week, we arrived at the slopes, found our rental equipment, hooked up our lift ticket, pulled our goggles down and stared up, well, not exactly up.

“You want to hit the mountain once before your lesson?” I asked Miles.

“What mountain?” Miles asked.

Not exactly Jackson Hole or Innsbruck but there is always inspiration. Taped to a locker next to the cafeteria is inspiration – a magazine article on Franz Klammer, the great Austrian downhiller who won the gold in 1976. Miles and I read the article, talked all the way home about the death-defying Austrian, then fired up YouTube.

“He knows what he has to do…

“All the pressure riding on his shoulders…

“He’s right on the edge of disaster…

“He almost went down…

“He’s all over this mountain…

“He’s almost in the hay bales…

“This is it, for the gold medal…”

It will make the hair on your arm stand up. Which is good enough for Miles and me.
