Flying Home

- -

A long journey, halfway complete. Thirty minutes before boarding Virgin Atlantic flight to Los Angeles, just a skip over an ocean and a continent, perhaps I’ll wave to Annie and Miles as we fly over Virginia. We do fly over Virginia, don’t we? My British friends asked me all week, “Who do you like in the Breeders’ Cup?” I thought, “Hmmm, who’s in the Breeders’ Cup?” Radio tomorrow afternoon, guess, I better study.

Wild week at Tattersalls. As always. We brought two horses home, a 2-year-old by Munnings and a 3-year-old by Empire Maker. Tough market, well, tough market for buyers. Brilliant market for sellers, as a 90 percent clearance rate made it arduous. The value of the dollar hurts, of course. And the ebullience of the international buyers -Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Khatar, America…I was out-bid by a British jump trainer, an Australian agent, an American jump trainer and others representing lands afar. Tough. We went the strongest on Glenard, a 4-year-old gelding by Arch. He would have looked good in America.

See you on the West Coast.
