Random thoughts and observations about racing, life, the world.

You’ve heard of Throw-back Thursday. This is Throw-it Tuesday.

Star: Michael Matz unveiled first-time starter Trieste on a quiet Monday at Delaware Park. Jockey Alex Cintron followed the adage, “Don’t give away anything they give you,” allowing the long-striding son of Tiznow to stride on and win comfortably. Stunning horse.

Timing: Tattersalls July and Fasig-Tipton July fall on the same day. July 9. I need to buy horses at Tatts and sell ads at Fasig…tricky.

Rush: Mountaineer has its post times listed 22 minutes apart. Can they really run races 22 minutes apart? They don’t use individual owners’ silks. I guess that helps.

Protection: Lot 161 in Tattersalls July Sale is a mare named Arabian Bride. She was bred to Helmet March 11. That makes her “Covered by Helmet.”

Our Three Winners: I read an article in The New Yorker last night. This is what happens when your family goes away, you read articles in The New Yorker. But, I digress. Margaret Talbot wrote “The Story of a Hate Crime,” about the deaths of Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salba and her sister Razan. Read the article. Google “Our Three Winners.” It gives some perspective to life as foreigners in this country.

Deer Crossing: Presque Isle Downs cancelled the rest of its Monday card because deer were seen in the infield. Or at least that’s what I read on the Internet. This is some game, of all the ways to lose, sometimes, you don’t even get to run.

Breaking news: Pete Rose bet on baseball while he was playing. Is this still a story?

Escape: Two inmates are still on the run, 18 days after escaping from jail. Watch Matt Lauer’s interview with Lyle Mitchell, husband of accused accomplice Joyce Mitchell. She told him, “Things got out of hand.” I used to think things got out of hand in my life. Wow.

Lessons: Father’s Day came and went Sunday. I didn’t spend it with my son (in Alabama with his grandfather) and I didn’t spend it with my dad. I did think of the first lesson my dad taught me. We walked along the shaded path on the way to the paddock at Delaware Park, in the early 70s. Dad had a runner, it obviously didn’t have a chance. Dad stopped, leaned down, looked me in the eye and said, “Son, if the horse loses, you just can’t cry about it.” I stifled tears as he told me, stifled them more when the horse lost and have tried to stifle them every time a horse has lost since. Thanks, Dad.

Prediction: Glenard wins a Grade 1 turf stakes before the year is over.

Prediction II: Eagle Poise wins the Thoroughbred division at Upperville next summer.

Prediction III: There will be more American runners at Royal Ascot next year.
