The countdown rolls on hopefully while you’re settling in for some wonderful Christmas Eve celebrations and traditions.

Speaking of traditions, what could be more expected in the world of American steeplechase racing than Jack Fisher? The man went into 2018 with six straight training titles and found himself trailing or tied with rival Ricky Hendriks for much of the season, including in the days leading up to the rich Far Hills Races in New Jersey.

Jack rolled out an assault on Far Hills, which Joe wrote about in the story “Fisher’s army marches to Far Hills.” The story was part preview of the meeting, Fisher commenting that “Far Hills has the money, they put on a good show, owners like to go there. You’ve got to run there” and part Stable Tour of the trainer’s runners.

The story came about when Joe caught up with Jack on his tractor while aerating and seeding his Maryland farm. “Much of what he said was sarcastic,” Joe wrote. “Some was unprintable. But plenty more was pure horse-training gold.”

The story ran October 18 and is No. 8 on the TIHR Top 10 for 2018.
