Godolphin’s homebred champion Essential Quality looks to bounce back from his first defeat and Rombauer looks to do what hasn’t been done since 2005 in Saturday’s $1.5 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park.

A field of eight led by that duo was entered Tuesday morning for the 153rd Belmont Stakes, which headlines a stakes-heavy card that also includes the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Manhattan and Grade 1 Acorn.

Essential Quality, last year’s champion 2-year-old male and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, finished fourth as the 5-2 favorite in the Kentucky Derby and was pegged as the 2-1 favorite for the 12-furlong Belmont. Regular jockey Luis Saez has the call for trainer Brad Cox.

Rombauer will try to become the 19th horse to complete the Preakness-Belmont double and the first since Afleet Alex pulled it off in 2005. He didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby before his 3 ½-length win in the Preakness Stakes for owners and breeders John and Diane Fradkin and trainer Michael McCarthy. Rombauer, the 3-1 second choice in the Belmont, gets a new jockey in John Velazquez with Flavien Prat opting to ride 7-2 third choice Hot Rod Charlie.

The Belmont goes as the 11th on Saturday’s 13-race card with post time set for 6:49 p.m. ET. The Belmont Day card starts at 11:35 a.m.
