The Inside Rail

Wild and wooly day at Virginia Gold Cup. Cold and blustery at the end of May. Really?

Schoodic made up for a frustrating spring with a win in the big one. Jack Fisher training the winner of the Gold Cup for his parents, 40 years after riding the winner of the Gold Cup for his parents.

Leslie Young and Keri Brion enjoyed big days. The Mean Queen sauntered home in the allowance, stamping her arrival like a gavel on a podium. A couple of mishaps in the apprentice race, a couple of slips on the turn, a claim, an inquiry in the steeplethon. Just another day at Great Meadow.

As for Riverdee, Gibalfaro posted another strong effort, just missing in the David Semmes Memorial. Great ride by Tom Garner on a true star for Riverdee. The 9-year-old ticked over $250,000 since joining the team in 2018. A hard-trying overachiever.

“He’s a dude,” Garner said.

Yup, he is that.

Douglas Road flattened out to be fourth, a few excuses and a few tweaks needed.

We are taking the day off today – the garden needs attention – as the sport heads to Winterthur.
